Project Relevance: This project represents BJYs design creativity dealing with challenging site issues in a campus setting
for a multi-functional building.
BJY provided comprehensive architectural, engineering and landscape architectural services for this 79,000-square-foot recreational sports building. Services included updating a seven-year-old facility plan and performing a range of economic evaluations to achieve the project within todays construction market. BJY provided programming and developed several schematic designs.
CHALLENGING SITE ISSUES
Project site work on the developed campus required demolition of part of the central campus mall area, utility relocation and creative building placement on the steeply sloped site in order to accommodate grade variations. The building on the 2.25-acre site is an interplay of operation, function and form. The center is oriented to take advantage of dramatic views to the southwest toward a steeply sloped ravine. The volume of the two-story sky lighted lobby, views to the grassy knoll and views to the landscaped mall, all contribute to the airy, garden-like feel of the building. The massing and main entrance of the building are oriented to reinforce the main pedestrian axis of the campus
DESIGN USES VIEWS & NATURAL LIGHT
The resulting design is a dynamic space which welcomes and stimulates physical fitness activities. The interior spaces are open and light, creating a sense of participation for students, faculty and guests. The Phase I center consists of a 400-seat gymnasium, basketball and volleyball courts, handball courts, multi-purpose area, weight room, classrooms, offices, lounge, juice bar, locker rooms, jogging track and expansion features for a future natatorium.
