Compressor Assembly Center, Ingersoll-Rand Co., Northwest Harris County, Texas - Designed for the fabrication and assembly of large gas compressors, this facility includes two primary buildings. The larger of the two, the manufacturing building, is a steel frame and skin structure utilizing prefabricated building systems. It contains a 150,000-square-foot warehouse, fabrication and assembly areas. Included in the building is an additional 50,000 square feet of mezzanine space for offices and employee support areas such as lockers, toilets and lunch room.
Connected to the manufacturing building by a walkway is a separate office building for administrative and engineering personnel. The office building includes 15,000 square feet of air conditioned, finished space.
Materials Evaluation Facility, Cameron Iron Works, Inc., Brookshire, Texas - Design of a pre-engineered, 9,000 SF facility for analyzing materials used in downhole oil tool equipment. A key design goal is to prevent release of toxic or noxious gases outside the facility and provide containment for missiles in the event of accidental rupture of autoclaves. Design features included blast doors; 12-inch concrete cubicle walls and roofs; fume air scrubbers; and gas detection air monitoring system.
Northwest Operating and Maintenance Facility, Dallas Transit System, Dallas, Texas - Master planning and design of an operating, dispatching and maintenance complex for a fleet of 250 buses, including approximately 100 articulated coaches. The complex includes a one-story, 67,000 SF maintenance facility with bus paint booth, chassis dynamometer and bus washes; a 12,000 SF transit building with offices, dispatch area and training areas; and several ancillary structures.
Manufacturing and Ware-house Facility, Mobil Chemical Company, Temple, Texas - The firm managed the complete design of a plastic bag manufacturing and warehouse facility, from site planning through A/E design to final facility acceptance. We provided plans and specifications for all sitework, buildings, utility systems, raw materials handling and storage systems, roads, rail line, parking and landscaping.
Carpenter Road Bus Maintenance & Storage Facility, Ann Arbor Transportation Authority, Ypsilanti, Michigan - BJY designed over $3 million of additions and improvements to this storage, maintenance garage and administrative facility. Work included design of a new storage building for 16 buses; addition to the maintenance garage consisting of three repair bays, storage for body parts, and locker facilities for mechanics; a second addition for drivers quarters; alterations to increase parts storage; and renovation of office space.
Waller Industrial Park, Galveston-Houston Company, Galveston, Texas - We provided master planning and facilities design for the 255-acre Waller Industrial Park. Twenty industrial sites were planned around a 10-acre lake on this wooded tract.
Northwest Bus Maintenance Facility, Dallas
Electronics Assembly Plant, Westinghouse Defense Group, College Station, Texas - This $7 million facility was designed for the assembly of electronic equipment used in military applications. Included in the 170,000 SF complex are an automated factory area, office area, recreational facilities, a 3,000 SF computer area, learning center, a volatile storage area and a cafeteria. Included in the office area are a word processing center and a telecommunications center for conferences. The plant, located on a 54-acre site, is designed to have a campus-type environment.
Production Hangar and Apron, U.S. Navy, Southern Division, Vought Aeronautics, Grand Prairie, Texas - BJY provided complete design for an 86,000 SF production hangar to serve as headquarters for airport operations and preflight checkout of aircraft.
Plant Expansion, The Fuller Company, Houston, Texas - Total design, purchasing, procurement and construction services for this major plant expansion. Fuller is a leading designer and fabricator of equipment for cement plants. The project involved the addition of 110,000 square feet of working area and associated sitework. |

Locomotive and Heavy Equipment Maintenance Facility, General Electric Company, Houston, Texas- Design of a 120,000 SF facility for the repair and rebuilding of locomotives, power transformers, switch-gear, gas turbines and other heavy equipment. The building contains two 60-foot-high crane bays and two 30-foot bays, with crane capacities ranging up to 200 tons.
Compressor Fabrication Plant, Southwest Industries, Pelican Island, Galveston, Texas - This project includes feasibility studies, design and preparation of plans and specifications for construction of a fabrication plant and site facilities. The main structures are a covered marine slip and shop assembly areas. Steel plate columns carry two bridge cranes with a single lift capacity of 400 tons. Site improvements include bulk-heads, roads, fill, drainage, utilities, a 3/4-mile rail spur and office buildings.
Logistical Materials Processing Center, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Fort Worth District, Kelly AFB, Texas - We provided A/E design of a 380,000 SF processing center. The building is designed to house 800 people on the main shift and includes a distribution center and ware-house. Among special features are conveyors, monorails and bridge cranes for materials handling.
Reconstruction of Freezer Facility, Oscar Mayer, Sherman, Texas - BJY provided evaluation and A/E design for the 120,000 SF freezer facility. The project included complete evaluation of problems caused by earth heaving as a result of frost created by the blast-freeze facility. Special systems designed to correct the problems included a special floor heating system, expansion joints, walls, vestibule, and other systems.
Kashmere Bus Maintenance Facility, Metropolitan Transit Authority of Harris County, Houston, Texas - Programming design and site development for a $27 million maintenance, administration, operations and storage facility for a total of 1,500 buses, with plans for expansion to 2,500 buses in the future. The 250,000 SF facility provides daily servicing, fueling and washing as well as both heavy and light maintenance. This project has received both architectural and engineering design awards.
Plant Modification and Expansion, Joy Manufacturing Company, Houston, Texas - A/E and interior design of a major modification and expansion program for this oil tool manufacturing facility. The project includes an 11,000 SF corporate office building which ties into an existing second-story office structure. The entire facade of the plant was re-designed. Improvements include the addition of a manufacturing area, concrete paving for material storage, and miscellaneous sitework.
High Explosives Machining Facility, Pantex Plant, Amarillo, Texas - This project had to meet a range of current safety and environmental issues. The scope of effort included demolition of existing buildings, removal of H.E. residue, design of the new facility, and design of a chemical waste minimization and handling process. Other project features include design of grading and paving for access road, parking, utilities, sanitary sewer, fire protection loop and domestic water. Special considerations included security criteria during construction; construction phasing for early startup; and blast effects. |
