Cullen Pavilion Restoration - Hermann Hospital

Health Care 

Numerous Projects, Hermann Hospital, Houston, Texas - We have completed a range of studies and design projects over the years for Hermann Hospital at the University of Texas Health Service Center.  Most recently, BJY restored function to Cullen Pavilion, the oldest building in the Complex.  The $16 million renovation included life safety code upgrade, structural system improvements, complete renovation and historical restoration.  The circa-1920s building was transformed into a thoroughly modern hospital offering the latest technological advances in patient care.  Other projects at Hermann include:

Consolidated Complex, U.S. Air Force School of Aerospace Medicine Facility, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Brooks AFB, San Antonio, Texas - Programming and conceptual design was completed by BJY for a new 92,700-square-foot single story complex to provide a training center and laboratory facility for professional education programs. The aerospace medicine unit features offices, clinic facility for training, medical laboratories, curriculum development area and lecture halls.  To meet a compressed design schedule, an intensive onsite design charrette was conducted, followed by compressed design and review processes.  The project won a Merit Award for design in the 1989 U.S. Air Force Annual Design Competition.  Features include:

University of Texas, Medical Branch, Galveston, Texas - We have served this client through a dozen projects covering studies, rehabilitation of facilities, additions, and new hospitals. Examples for each project type are the John Sealy Hospital study, rehabilitation of the Texas State Psychiatric Hospital, and the new St. Mary's Hospital.

St. Joseph Hospital, Sisters  
of Charity of the Incarnate Word, Houston, Texas - Over the past three decades, BJY provided a wide range of services for this downtown Houston medical complex.  Projects included master planning, program phasing, and design for renovation, major expansions and new medical care buildings for the hospital complex.  Early assignments include the main building of the downtown medical complex, the central heating and cooling plant, maternity center, and psychiatric hospital.  BJY also took a leading role in overseeing design of the expansion program.  The upgrade program included renovation to the 840-bed main hospital, a new six-floor, 136,000-square-foot ambulatory care center, and other major buildings.

 


Texas Department of Corrections Hospital

Medical Facilities Design Office (CEMFDO), U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Huntsville Division, Washington, D.C. - BJY is providing its comprehensive specialized health care architectural and engineering consulting expertise to CEMFDO on a continuing task order basis for a variety of projects at various locations.  The projects all address the specific technical concerns of health care facilities and cover a range of services from health care space design, medical waste management, specialized electrical needs of medical facilities and transportation movement within hospitals.  Project examples are:

 Veterans Administration Hospital, Waco, Texas - BJY prepared plans and specifications for modernization of 16 separate buildings on a 350-acre site.  Renovations provided for upgrade of all building systems, fire and life safety standards upgrade, replacement of electrical systems, and modernization of major hospital buildings, including the 1,400-bed psychiatric unit. 
  

Walter Reed Army Medical Center Upgrade, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Washington, DC - We completed nine assignments for alterations and repairs to existing health care facilities and support systems on the 147-acre medical complex. Among the projects are life safety system upgrades, complete HVAC renovation, and a boiler plant modernization. 
  

St. John Hospital, Nassau Bay, Texas - BJY provided planning, programming, architectural and engineering services to expand a 130-bed hospital by 270 beds.  The addition also added state-of-the-art medical facilities to meet the competitive demands of a changing health care marketplace.  The addition includes:

Texas Department of Corrections Hospital, University of Texas, Galveston, Texas - This inmate hospital, at the time of construction in 1988, was the only prison hospital in the country owned and operated by a university rather than a correctional facility.  It includes general medical and surgical care, long-term chronic care and outpatient care.  The hospital serves all 28 inmate units in the TDC system and was designed in accordance with nationally recognized standards for health care and prisoner treatment.  Owned and operated by the University of Texas, the 144-bed hospital serves as a teaching facility for residents, interns and medical students. 

Crane Memorial Hospital, Crane County, Crane, Texas - This project replaced an existing outdated hospital and was phased for continuous service to patients.  This small 28-bed hospital features all medical/ surgical/obstetrical facilities for complete medical care.

Veterans Administration, Research and Education Building, Houston, Texas - This medical research laboratory facility was designed for research in biochemistry, cardiology, culture development, infectious disease, metabolism and other health topics.  A flexible modular design accommodates changing research programs.  The three-story building includes:

Texas Research Institute for Mental Sciences, Texas Department of Mental Health and Mental Retardation, Houston, Texas - This new intensive treatment facility was designed to meet several objectives in connection with research and treatment of mental health and retardation problems.

St. Joseph Hospital, Houston, Texas 

Ambulatory Care Center, St. Joseph Hospital, Houston, Texas - This six-floor, $11 million Ambulatory Care Center and parking garage connects to existing buildings in the St. Joseph complex.  Among departments in the new building are: 

  • Radiation Therapy

  • Renal Dialysis 

A long-range development program was established and concepts and staging of future physical facilities were recommended.  Other design assignments at St. Joseph have included a new vertical transportation core and an expansion of the heating and cooling plant. 

Brooke Army Medical Center, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, San Antonio, Texas - Comprehensive life safety upgrade and A/E design of three major facilities serving 94,000 personnel.  Renovations pro-vided for 362-bed pavilion, 212-bed main hospital and 58-bed psychiatric unit.
